The Evolution of the kitchen: From ancient times to modern-day centrality

The kitchen has always been the heart of the home—or has it? In ancient and medieval times, the kitchen was primarily a workspace, often isolated from the main living areas. Sure, it was essential, but it was also hidden, frequently relegated to basements or separate outbuildings, especially in noble estates.
Gradually, though, the kitchen began to find its place at the heart of the home, slowly gaining the central role we recognize today.

The shift from the Renaissance to the Industrial Age

During the Renaissance, the kitchen area began evolving significantly, driven by introducing new culinary technologies and the gas stove in the 19th Century. These advances transformed the kitchen, making it a more central part of the domestic sphere. But who truly “lived” in this space? As Imma Fiorino explains in her book, women’s roles began to evolve from mere helpers to key figures in the kitchen. In ancient Egypt, women were excluded from kitchens, often considered unreliable. Still, by the 18th Century, they transitioned from being “scullery maids” to cooks, eventually becoming the masters of their household domains.

From the 20th Century to the contemporary kitchen

Cooking became an enjoyable experience, especially with the advent of modern appliances that promised to make anything possible. This cultural shift was also supported by cookbooks, most notably ‘The Silver Spoon,’ which taught women how to create delicious dishes and offered guidance on kitchen organization to keep everything neat and efficient. Today, the contemporary kitchen is a place of joy and satisfaction where culinary creativity knows no bounds.

Today, Snaidero America’s kitchen collections embrace this trend, presenting innovative designs that combine technology and aesthetics. These kitchens are envisioned as more than just functional spaces. They gather places for connection and togetherness, whether for solo moments or shared with loved ones. Each kitchen is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, blending Italian craftsmanship with a modern elegance that reflects our ongoing pursuit of excellence. One thing is sure: the story continues to evolve, and so do we.

Timeless interior paint colors for a modern Italian-Inspired home

When curating the perfect color palette for your home, the challenge often lies in balancing modern trends with timeless elegance. However, with Snaidero America, you don’t have to choose between the two. Our approach to design embraces timeless interior paint colors that effortlessly blend with modern aesthetics, ensuring that your home remains stylish and enduring.

The Art of timeless design

At Snaidero America, we believe true elegance is rooted in simplicity and quality. This philosophy is reflected in our choice of color palettes, inspired by nature and crafted to stand the test of time. Neutrals and earth tones, such as soft taupes, refined grays, and muted greens, are at the core of our designs. These colors not only exude sophistication but also serve as a versatile foundation for any space, particularly when it comes to our Italian-inspired kitchens.

For example, consider our extensive range of finishes, from High-Gloss Lacquer to Laminated Ceramic. These materials are visually stunning and incredibly durable, ensuring that your kitchen retains its beauty for years to come. The neutral tones available in these finishes allow you to create a modern space that is simultaneously warm, inviting, and timeless.

Integrating color and texture

Some kitchen finishes

While neutral palettes form the backbone of timeless design, adding natural textures and subtle contrasts can elevate your space even further. Snaidero’s offerings include finishes like wood veneers and porcelain stoneware, which bring a touch of nature into your home. Whether it’s the warmth of whitewashed oak or the sleekness of ceramic, these materials are perfect for creating a harmonious environment that feels both modern and grounded.

How to add pops of color

Just because you’ve chosen a neutral base doesn’t mean you have to forgo color entirely. At Snaidero America, we encourage clients to incorporate vibrant accents to enhance the timeless quality of their homes. For example, you might opt for bold, colorful chairs or striking pieces of artwork to add energy to your kitchen or living area. These elements can provide a modern twist without overwhelming the overall design.

Ideal kitchen size guide: designing your perfect kitchen

Determining Your Ideal Kitchen Size

Designing your kitchen starts with understanding how much space you need. Whether you’re maneuvering between pots and pans or discovering the joy of baking and decorating cakes, focusing on your lifestyle is crucial when purchasing or renovating a home. But do you know how many square feet an ideal kitchen should be? In this article, we’ll help you discover the perfect kitchen size for your needs.

Assessing Your Lifestyle and Cooking Habits

Before opting for a chef’s kitchen island or a minimalist kitchen without upper cabinets, ask yourself: “How much time do I spend in the kitchen?” and “What do I want this space to represent for me and my guests?” Identifying your cooking habits and lifestyle is the first step in determining the perfect kitchen size for your home.

Standard Kitchen Sizes and Layouts

Kitchen sizes can vary greatly, but understanding common dimensions can help you make an informed decision:

  • Eat-In Kitchens: Ranging from 100 to 270 square feet, these kitchens are spacious enough to accommodate a dining table and comply with all health and safety standards, including a minimum ceiling height of 9 feet.
  • Kitchenettes: Ideal for urban dwellers, these compact kitchens range from 20 to 90 square feet. They are often integrated into the living area and take a backseat to other home spaces.

Designing for the Aspiring Chef: The Eat-In Kitchen

An eat-in kitchen is highly recommended for those who find cooking to be more than just following a recipe but rather a passion and a way to show love for their family.

Space Requirements for a Functional Eat-In Kitchen

An eat-in kitchen typically requires a space between 100 and 270 square feet. This size allows for the inclusion of a dining table and ensures the kitchen remains functional and efficient. When planning an eat-in kitchen, consider the following:

  • Adequate Counter Space: Ensure there’s enough room for food preparation and cooking activities.
  • Storage Solutions: Incorporate plenty of cabinets and drawers to keep your kitchen organized.
  • Comfortable Dining Area: Make enough space for a dining table where family and friends can gather.

Tips for Maximizing Space and Efficiency

Even in larger kitchens, maximizing space and efficiency is key:

  • Work Triangle: Ensure that the sink, stove, and refrigerator are positioned to form an efficient work triangle, reducing the distance between major workstations.
  • Multifunctional Furniture: Consider furniture that can serve multiple purposes, like an island with built-in storage or a dining table that doubles as a prep space.
  • Vertical Storage: Use the vertical space by installing cabinets up to the ceiling and adding hooks or pegboards for utensils and cookware.

Solutions for the Urban Dweller: The Kitchenette

A kitchenette might be the perfect solution if you prefer intimate dinners over large family gatherings and frequent restaurants more than your pantry.

Ideal Dimensions for a Kitchenette

A kitchenette typically ranges from 20 to 90 square feet and is often open to the living area. This compact space is perfect for those who don’t need a large kitchen but still want a functional area for occasional cooking.

Design Ideas for Small Kitchens

Maximizing a small kitchen requires creativity and smart design choices:

  • Compact Appliances: Choose smaller, space-saving appliances that fit well in limited spaces.
  • Open Shelving: Instead of bulky cabinets, opt for open shelves to create a sense of openness.
  • Foldable Furniture: Consider foldable tables and chairs that can be tucked away when not in use.

Practical Tips for Kitchen Space Planning

Planning your kitchen space involves balancing aesthetics and functionality. Here are some practical tips to help you get started:

Creating a Wishlist for Your Kitchen Design

Before diving into the design, make a list of your must-haves and nice-to-haves. This can include everything from the type of countertops to the style of cabinets and the layout of the appliances.

Balancing Aesthetics and Functionality

A beautiful kitchen is great, but it needs to be functional too. Consider the following:

  • Ergonomic Design: Ensure that the kitchen layout allows for easy movement and access to all areas.
  • Durable Materials: Choose materials that are stylish, durable, and easy to maintain.
  • Personal Touches: Add personal touches like a backsplash that reflects your style or custom cabinetry that fits your specific needs.

The ideal kitchen size depends on your lifestyle and cooking habits. Whether you need a spacious eat-in kitchen or a compact kitchenette, planning and designing with your needs in mind will create a functional and enjoyable space. For further inspiration, consider exploring designs from Snaidero America, known for their stylish and practical kitchen solutions.

Kitchen Cabinets: perfect for the open space Living Area

Standard or with greater depth, kitchen cabinets are a functional and ultra-contemporary solution.

In contemporary homes, where the kitchen is often integrated into an open-plan living area, kitchen cabinets serve as an ideal solution both functionally and aesthetically. They beautifully complement islands or peninsulas, enhancing the overall look.

Typically placed as a backdrop for the central modules, kitchen cabinets offer more than just standard pantry storage. They can feature pull-out shelves, integrated appliances—either exposed or hidden behind doors—and pull-out tops that expand the available workspace. These features are especially valued when the kitchen shares space with the living area.

Way Modern Kitchen made in Italy

Some kitchen cabinets, with greater depth or specialized corner solutions, can even house a mini laundry area.

One standout model is Way Materia by Snaidero, featuring a compact island with handleless doors in the sophisticated Ceramica Laminam Calce Grigio finish, perfectly matching the worktop. The Passpartout cabinetry, with large oak wood doors in a charcoal finish, is designed for maximum organization, offering space for wine storage, pantry items, and mixed-use areas.

The large, thin porcelain stoneware surfaces on the Laminam ceramic fronts provide a cutting-edge solution with exceptional beauty and durability. Laminam ceramic worktops are hygienic, antibacterial, and can withstand hot liquids, hot pans, and even sharp blades.

This innovative concept uses slabs of pure porcelain stoneware, made entirely in Italy with state-of-the-art technology, available in large sizes and reduced thicknesses, making it a modern and practical choice for any kitchen.

Kitchen Lighting: the perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics

Every kitchen tells a unique story; lighting is crucial in bringing that story to life. At Snaidero America, we are committed to creating kitchens where beauty meets practicality, and lighting is one of the critical elements in achieving this balance.

Innovative lighting solutions

The lighting solutions offered by Snaidero America are designed to transform every space. From LED light profiles to spotlights and germicidal lamps, each element is thoughtfully integrated into the kitchen design, enhancing visibility in work areas and inside cabinets and highlighting architectural details such as toe kicks and shelves.

No more Dimly-Lit Areas: only perfect illumination

In many kitchens, lighting is often overlooked, leading to dimly lit areas that can compromise the space’s functionality. With Snaidero, this problem is a thing of the past. Our integrated lighting solutions make the kitchen more efficient and highlight design details, creating a welcoming and well-lit environment.

Our lighting systems are fully dimmable and adjustable in color temperature, ranging from 3000k to 4000k, allowing you to create any ambiance you desire. Additionally, cutting-edge technology lets you control the lighting through remote controls, motion sensors, wall switches, and Bluetooth apps, providing a modern and versatile experience.

Blue Light: protection and hygiene

Cleanliness is essential in the kitchen, but it shouldn’t compromise the quality of materials. Snaidero’s germicidal lamps offer an eco-friendly solution, using Blue Light at a wavelength of 465 nm to reduce the presence of bacteria and unpleasant odors without damaging surfaces.

This advanced technology protects your kitchen safely without altering food and ensures deep and effective sanitization.

Order and functionality with Pop-Up sockets and cable ducts

The modern kitchen is filled with small appliances, and managing cables can often be a challenge. Snaidero’s pop-up sockets, seamlessly integrated into the kitchen design, offer an elegant and practical solution. With a simple movement, the sockets rise for use and then retract flush with the countertop when finished, leaving the space clean and clutter-free.

Wireless charging modules for smartphones and cable ducts complete our offering, ensuring that every detail of your kitchen is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Good news!  Shawna, and Snaidero America, recently placed second place in the 2022-2023 Sub Zero Wolf Kitchen Design Contest.

All Finalists and the Student Winner will receive a trip for two to attend the Winners’ Summit and Gala, held from October 13-16, 2024, at the Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The Summit offers design professionals an opportunity to come together and celebrate their achievements. The 13 Global Winners will be announced at the Gala, honoring their accomplishments in design across the following categories: first-, second-, and third-place in each of the Contemporary, Transitional, and Traditional design categories, First-Time Entrant, Small Space Kitchen, and Best Use Outside of Kitchen. The previously announced Student Winner will also be recognized.

Eligibility for the contest required that all design and construction be fully completed within the contest period of January 1, 2022, through December 31, 2023. Both indoor and outdoor kitchen design submissions had to meet specific criteria to ensure a diverse range of entries.
